The five elements in a match — producing, checking, and reading by relationship
updated · 5 min read
The five elements are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Fixed relations hold between them, and those relations are the ground a compatibility reading stands on. The reading on this service puts them at the centre of the calculation.
The producing relation
In the producing relation, one element brings the next into being and feeds it. Wood burns and makes fire; fire becomes ash and makes earth; metal is taken from earth; water forms on metal; water grows wood. In that order it comes full circle.
In a match, which side produces changes the meaning. If you produce them, it is a relationship of giving; if they produce you, one of being supported. The same producing relation reverses the roles depending on the direction.
The checking relation
In the checking relation, one element holds the other down. Wood checks earth, earth checks water, water checks fire, fire checks metal, metal checks wood — five again, full circle. Since it takes the force out of the other, a reading starts by establishing which is checking which.
| You | Them | Relation |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Fire | Producing (you produce) |
| Fire | Wood | Producing (you are produced) |
| Wood | Earth | Checking (you check) |
| Earth | Wood | Checking (you are checked) |
| Water | Water | The same element |
Two of the same element are said to stand alike. Talk moves quickly between them, and they tend to miss the same things. All twenty-five pairings of five by five fall into one of these five kinds.
The same arrangement reads differently by relationship
This is the most important point in reading a match. The same arrangement — being checked by the other person — comes out quite differently in a romance and at work.
| Relationship | Reading of the arrangement where they check you |
|---|---|
| As friends | You tend to fall in with their pace. If it is too much, fix your own plans first |
| As colleagues | You often work to their standard. Some of that tension lifts the quality |
| They are senior to you | The demands are hard, and it is an arrangement that develops you. It tends to read later as the stretch in which you grew |
| Romantically | You are easily carried along, and the pull is strong as well |
Do not choose who to spend time with by the score alone. The meaning of an arrangement of elements changes when what is asked of each of you changes. That is why this service has you choose the kind of relationship.
Where the elements are taken from
This service takes the elements from three places: the day stem of the Four Pillars, the principal star of Nine Star Ki, and the personality number from the strokes of the name. All three pass through the same table of relations, so changing the kind of relationship changes all three readings at once.
The life path number from numerology is then added, giving four points of view in the judgement. The day stem carries the most weight, since it is taken to represent the person themselves.
The name reading counts the strokes of Japanese characters, so where either name is written in the Latin alphabet it is left out and the score is worked out from the remaining three, with a note saying so.
Common questions
- How do I find my own element?
- Take the day stem of the Four Pillars from your date of birth. In a reading on this service, the day stem and its element appear in the Four Pillars section of the result.
- Should I avoid people in a checking relation to me?
- That is not how it is read. A restraining force is at work, and nothing decides that the outcome will be poor. In a relationship where the roles are clear, that tension can be what gives it purpose.
- Is it a good match if we share an element?
- Conversation is said to come easily. Since you will both tend to miss the same things, it helps to have someone with a different view in the mix.
