Yin, yang and the five elements — the circle worth learning once

updated · 5 min read

AoiAoi here. There are many eastern methods, and the idea underneath them is one. Hold on to it and things that looked separate start reading by the same mechanism.

Yin, yang and the five elements form a view of nature set out in ancient China. Everything is seen as divided into two — yin and yang — and into five: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The Four Pillars and Nine Star Ki both stand on this frame.

There is not much to learn. Five elements and two kinds of relation between them. With those three things, questions of compatibility and questions of character read the same way.

The producing relation

In the producing relation, one element brings the next into being and feeds it. Wood burns and makes fire; fire becomes ash and makes earth; metal is taken from earth; water forms on metal; water grows wood. In that order it comes full circle.

The circle is nature applied directly. Burn wood and you get fire; after the burning, ash — that is, earth — remains. Earth holds minerals, and cooled metal gathers droplets of water. That water grows wood. The order carries meaning, so picturing the scene fixes it better than memorising a list.

Set the five out in a circle and neighbouring elements stand in this relation. Learn the order and you can see at once which way the force runs.

The checking relation

In the checking relation, one element holds the other down. Wood takes nourishment from earth; earth dams water; water puts out fire; fire melts metal; metal cuts wood. This too runs full circle in five.

Checking does not mean a poor relation. A restraining force is at work, and whether it comes out well or badly varies with the situation. Tension can lift the quality of things.

Yin and yang are not strong and weak

Each element divides further into yin and yang, giving ten in all. These are the ten heavenly stems of the Four Pillars. It does not mean yang is strong and yin weak; it marks a difference in how the same element comes out.

Within wood, the yang form is described as a great tree growing straight up and the yin form as grasses spreading pliantly. Neither is the better of the two.

The same mechanism works across methods

This service takes an element from the day stem of the Four Pillars, from the principal star of Nine Star Ki and from the strokes of a name. All three pass through the same table of producing and checking, so the frame of the reading does not change with the method.

The compatibility reading uses these relations too. The same arrangement is read differently depending on whether you are looking at friends or at a manager and their report. The mechanism is shared; how it is applied changes with the relationship.

AoiOnce yin, yang and the five elements make sense, you start noticing the same words in the Four Pillars and in Nine Star Ki. There is a moment where you realise you never had to learn them twice.

Common questions

How do I find my own element?
From the day stem of the Four Pillars. A reading on this service shows the day stem and its element on the result screen. A date of birth is all it needs.
Am I incompatible with someone in a checking relation?
Do not take it that way. It is an arrangement where a restraining force is at work, and once the roles are clear it lasts a long time. Sometimes the tension works in its favour.
Does Western astrology have five elements too?
Western astrology has a separate frame of four: fire, earth, air and water. The number and the thinking differ, so it is better not to mix them.
