Before you send a photograph — four things worth checking
updated · 5 min read
A photograph of a palm can include your fingerprints. A photograph of a face is itself information that identifies a person. Both are worth checking the handling of before you send them.
Look less at the photograph than at whether the handling is written down. A properly run service states whether it stores anything and who it passes it to. If you look for that and cannot find it, declining to send is a perfectly reasonable decision.
1. Whether it is stored
The most important point. Used for the analysis and discarded, or kept on a server? If kept, for how long. A service that does not say leaves you without the material to judge.
2. Which country it goes to
Where AI is used to analyse a photograph, the data goes to wherever that provider is based. When it leaves the country, Japan's personal data law requires that this be explained to the user.
This service uses a provider based in the United States. There is a screen asking you to confirm that before anything is sent. Sending abroad is not itself the problem; sending without saying so is.
3. Whether it is used for training
Whether an image you send is used to train an AI depends on the provider's settings. Where that is not written down, it is better to check before using the service.
On the provider this service uses, the setting is that data sent is not used for training. Since a provider's policy can change, we check this periodically at our end as well.
| What to check | What you want to see |
|---|---|
| Retention | Stated as discarded immediately after analysis |
| Recipient | Which provider, in which country, is written down |
| Training use | Stated as not used |
| How consent is taken | Confirmed on screen before sending |
4. Do not send a photograph of anyone else
This one gets overlooked, and it rests with the user. Do not send a photograph of anyone's face but your own to a divination service without their consent. This service prohibits it in its terms of use.
Check whether anyone else appears in the background as well. When photographing a palm, somewhere without people around is the safer choice.
Note: the person asking questions in this article is fictional. This is not a record of a real consultation.
Common questions
- Can I have a reading without sending a photograph?
- You can. Face and palm are additional; a reading works from a date of birth and a name alone. Whether to use photographs is your choice.
- Can you delete a photograph I sent afterwards?
- This service never stores them in the first place. They are discarded when the analysis finishes, so there is no deletion process to go through.
- Is it a problem if my fingerprints show?
- On the premise that nothing is stored, nothing remains. If it still concerns you, standing back a little makes fine detail less visible.
