Why we do not ask your time of birth — stopping at the Sun sign
updated · 5 min read
A horoscope is a picture of the sky at the moment of birth: which signs held the Sun, the Moon and the planets, and what was rising on the horizon. Drawing it accurately needs the time and the place as well as the date.
This service does not ask for the time or the place, and so it does not draw a whole chart. What it handles is the Sun sign.
What cannot be produced without a time
What can and cannot be produced follows from how fast each body moves. The Sun moves about one degree a day, so the date alone essentially settles which sign it was in.
The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day. A sign is thirty degrees, so it crosses into the next in about two and a half days. Days on which the sign differs between morning and evening are not unusual.
| What is read | What it needs | On this service |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | A date of birth | Produced |
| Moon sign | A date and an approximate time | Not produced |
| Ascendant | A date, an exact time and a place | Not produced |
| Planetary positions | A date, an exact time and a place | Not produced |
The ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The Earth turns one degree in four minutes, so ten minutes out moves the result. A different place turns the horizon differently. It cannot be guessed at.
Produce a Moon sign or an ascendant from a half-remembered time and anyone it lands wrongly for carries that interpretation with them. Better to withhold what cannot be produced than to hand over a reading that does not hold.
What is read from the Sun sign
Once the Sun sign is settled, several things attach to it. This service adds three to the result: the element, the quality and the ruling planet.
| Category | What it contains | What it is taken to show |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Fire, earth, air, water | How you tend to meet things |
| Quality | Cardinal, fixed, mutable | Habits of starting, and of keeping going |
| Ruling planet | A body assigned to each sign | The body that stands for the sign's nature |
The twelve signs fall out of these four and three exactly: four times three is twelve. Without learning the signs one by one, the element and the quality give you a sense of the nature.
One sign read across five areas
A person has one Sun sign. And yet the result screen shows five areas: the overall current, the people around you, work, love and home. How are five produced from one sign?
By applying the same quality from a different angle in each area. The sign does not change; where it is looked at does.
Take a Capricorn quality of climbing the stairs. In the overall current it is read as the tilt of how you live; in work as how you go about things; in love as where you turn your heart. One core applied to five settings.
The assignment is fixed in advance and does not change on redrawing. The same date of birth is read from the same angle whenever you look.
A separate system from the five elements
The elements in Western astrology are four: fire, earth, air and water. The five elements used in the Four Pillars and Nine Star Ki are wood, fire, earth, metal and water — a different number and a different correspondence. The similar names make them easy to mix.
This service shows the two separately on the result screen. The compatibility reading uses the five elements; the astrological elements are not used in that calculation.

Common questions
- If I know my time of birth, could you produce a Moon sign?
- Not at present, since there is no field for entering a time. Were it ever supported, it would come with a clear statement that a half-remembered time does not give accuracy.
- Is the sign in a magazine horoscope the Sun sign?
- It is. What is generally meant by someone's star sign is the Sun sign — the same division this service produces.
- Is it all right if I was born outside Japan?
- The Sun sign is determined against noon Japan time. For a birth abroad, a time close to the turn of the date can move the result either way.
